Over the past two weeks my colleagues in the General Assembly and I have heard from hundreds of citizens in response to recent events at the University of Virginia. Without exception, those messages expressed varying degrees of shock, dismay and outrage, first at the forced resignation of President Sullivan and then at the choreographed set piece resulting in her reinstatement. The information provided by the Board at every stage was meager and vague, not at all what one expects from the leadership of an institution dedicated to free and open discourse.

I am extremely pleased that President Sullivan has been restored to her post and I applaud the Governor's efforts to calm a campus roiled by discontent. Nevertheless, these events have made clear the need for a public conversation about university governance and the authority of university boards. I believe this conversation should take place in the context of the future direction of higher education in Virginia, and I look forward to being a part of it.
