BOARD OF VISITORS

Dear Members of the University of Virginia BOV:

I am writing to you as a "fellow" Virginia University "member", a mother of a U. Va. graduate, and grandmother of a U. Va. graduate & her husband. I am also a graduate of a Virginia State University.

My ties with the University of Virginia are deep and long-standing. I graduated from the College of William & Mary, B.A. Government and worked as a student assistant to William Abbot (later Professor at U. Va.) at the Institute of Early American History & Culture, and after graduation, assistant for collection of letters between Jefferson & Madison. One summer I sane in "The Common Glory," a Paul Green outdoor drama
telling the story of Jefferson and the writing of the Declaration of Indeendence. I am a member of Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, founded by Mr. Jefferson.

Now I am a Professor Emerita at George Mason University, having taught there for 26 years (including many classes in American Political Thought -- Jefferson again!), GMU, the "adult child" of U. Va.) and have met many times with Virginia Conference of Political Scientists at U. Va.
I am proud to be the mother of a B.A. & M.A. grad. of U. Va (who, with her husband, lives in Albemarle Co.) and grandmother of a recent U. Va. B.A. graduate & her (now) husband, B.S. in Computer Engineering, U. Va.

I write at length about all this not to wear out your eyes, but to indicate that I care enormously about the University and its community and its future. I have read and thought deeply about this current firing of the University President and the reasons cited for the firing.

I urge you to vote to re-instate President Teresa Sullivan on Tuesday.

Respectfully and with all good wishes for the entire U. Va. community,

Barbara B. Knight
(Emerita, George Mason University)
